The Book Thief

15 Mar

At the weekend we wandered along to the cinema to see The Book Thief.

*some small spoilers but nothing too crucial!*

I had few expectations, i hadn’t seen the trailer; all i knew was that it was set in Germany during WWII and that it followed the story of a little blonde girl… who presumably stole books!

It was beautiful.

A glorious piece of film: stunning cinematography, captivating and a really well written story with realistic, enigmatic characters, played out by equally beguiling actors and actresses. The parts of Liesel and Hans, Sophie Nélisse and Geoffrey Rush respectively, were the most enchanting. Their relationship made the horrors just bearable. The sheer harmony of their connections made my eyes tear just as much as the monstrosities… and i won’t spoil the ending but bring your tissues.

I loved this film for another reason as well: it’s portrayal of a love and vital importance for storytelling. It is a tale literally centered around that ideal. Without that first stolen book, Liesel would never have formed such a strong bond with Hans (or Max), nor would she have been able to cope, and aid others in coping, with the fear surrounding their lives and ultimately it saved her life.

The scene in the bomb shelter where Liesel makes the realisation of how her love for stories and Hans’ love for music are equated and the joy of sharing them with an audience is enough to block out the noise of the bombs above and the fear below broke my heart; my eyes overspilled and i wept at the unconditional beauty.

I’m always ensnared by a good story, and a good story that preaches the love and critical precedence for storytelling has more than earned it’s place in my favourites.

Thoroughly recommend you watch (and read!) The Book Thief.

Teenagers

9 Mar

Grrr (2)

I’ve been a bit of a moody teenager this week. Why? Fuck knows. I’ve slept for essentially the whole week, i’ve eaten nothing but shitty junk food, as a result my skin is spottier than usual, i’ve barely spoken more then a couple of two-syllable words and i’ve just generally felt a bit shit. When explaining to my tutor why i hadn’t quite gotten as far along with my piece as i should i have i just wanted to stomp away and scream “YOU JUST DON’T GET ME eh heh heh heH”…. but on the plus side i’ve been enjoying some of the music i’d listen to after stomping up the stairs and flinging myself onto my bead with such fantastic apathy… here is my top 10 moody teenage tracks:

No.10 AFI Miss Murder

No.9 Thirty Seconds to Mars The Kill

Baby Sophz do you still have that Jared poster?!

No.8 Jeffree Star Plastic Surgery Slumber Party

I’m not sure why but we pretty much wanted to be Jeffree Star… not so moody teeanger but makes me smile when it comes up on shuffle. We had Jeffree Star themed party once… we made pink cupcakes with penises iced on them… we were awesome…

No.7 Mindless Self Indulgence Straight to Video

I had a huge crush on LynZ… not so sure why… but still resent my friends who met her at a gig i wasn’t invited to *sobs pathetically*

No.6 The Blackout I’m a riot? You’re a fucking riot.

We met these guys. They were pretty awesome. There’s a particularly sweaty photo of me with the lead singer somewhere…

No.5 Paramore Misery Business

Okay, so i liked my music whiney and self-involved…. whatcha gonna do about it bitch?!

No.4 Fall Out Boy Dance, Dance

No.3 Panic! at the Disco Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off

I’m not quite sure what the deal with really long, irrelevant, names for their songs was… but whatevs i like this one!

No.2 Wheatus Teenage Dirtbag

If you don’t like this song we can’t be friends.

No.1 My Chemical Romance Helena

My Chemical Romance were my favourite band. The were my first favourite band. I still listen to them. I owe them a lot… without them i don’t know if i would have gotten into music as much as i have, and well, they were the main reason i managed to acquire the school friends that i did…. most of whom i still rock out now with, so, yeah, thanks MCR. On a related note i’m married to a horse named Gerard Way, just thought ya’ll should know.

??????????

Fair to say my parents didn’t come up to my room much…

Oh, and if you were interested i’ve matured back into the beautiful unicorn that i am and am much happier 🙂

Tinderstick

28 Feb

I’ve been craving new music lately (hence the recent stream of blog posts!) and Tindersticks sated my ears just wonderfully. A youtube session i quite happily danced down, and now all the albums are in my amazon wishlist!! The vocals are glorious and the instrumentals are goosebump worthy. Here are a few of my favourites:

I love the video for Medicine, it’s a beautiful little insight into their world.

say goodbye to the city

Stress Free

26 Feb

After a recommendation from a friend a few weeks ago i have rather fallen in love with The XX

The music is beautifully chilled and makes for the best relaxing background noise…. and that’s coming from a stressed out jeweller in the lead up to her degree show! so it’s as zen as it comes!!

The video for Angels is one of my favourites, like the music it exudes peace and serenity… and is more than a little gloriously trippy; like a landscape in a dream.

Islands

Crystalised…. his voice…. ugh…… *melts*…..

Enjoy…….

Two Doors Down

14 Feb

I wish i was in love with a girl who lived two doors down… i wish i was in love…

I’ve had this song on repeat for the past week or so, it’s wonderful, and seeing as it is that oh so sickening commercialization of love day it seems rather appropriate to post today!

I love how fantastically shit the video is, it’s brilliant. I feel like i should watch it with a kind of car crash embarrassment but i can’t help but find it really cool! and am now more than a little attracted to this band!

Seeing as it’s also my birthday today, have a bonus tune!

Happy Valentine’s Day 🙂

An old classic but it’s still getting me out of bed and making me twist my naked arse around my bedroom in the morning…
